Denplan approached Atom to produce a magazine that would effectively inform their member dentists about the range of business support resources available to them through Denplan.

The magazine, which would be read by Denplan member dentists as well as their practice staff, would show how Denplan products and services could help dentists develop a more valuable and profitable practice.

Specifically, during the period around the introduction of a new NHS contract for dentists, Update would promote the benefits of a full ‘conversion’ to Denplan.

Atom created Update, which provides Denplan dental practices with updates on the latest development in products and services offered by Denplan, as well as news of key dentistry and business stories set to have an impact on private dental practices. The magazine interprets business and dentistry issues for members and highlights the specific support Denplan can offer.

A ‘Business Focus’ feature gives advice to the dentist as a small business owner and provides practical information on issues such as marketing, management, finance, strategy, with expertise provided by Denplan’s own business team. These issues are brought to life with case studies focusing on member dentists, highlighting the challenges they have faced and the benefits they have realised through using Denplan resources.
 
An ‘Analysis’ feature provides detailed interpretation of the significant political changes taking place in dental provision, while a ‘Professional Briefing’ feature highlights the professional resources Denplan offers dentists who have decided to ‘go it alone’, outside the NHS.

The Practice News pages help to reinforce a sense of community among Denplan practices, by featuring news from practice teams around the UK: the awards they’ve achieved or the charity events they are planning. The magazine also includes details of Denplan events, and carries recruitment adverts for Denplan practices.

An Update readership survey was mailed to member dentists between June and July 2007. Out of 174 responses:
  • 76% said they make their copy of Update available for others to read (APA average 7%)
  • 51% visited a website as a result of reading Update (APA average 13%)
  • 92% agreed or strongly agreed that Update helps them understand the benefits of Denplan

  • 88% agreed or strongly agreed that Update gives added value to being with Denplan

  • 95% agreed or strongly agreed that Update explains Denplan’s products and services
