The RIBA Journal goes directly to 30,000 specifiers and decision-makers – many of them working at senior managerial level, many operating internationally, many acting as commissioning clients and strategic advisors. They are an articulate and opinionated bunch who wield considerable economic power.

In the RIBA’s own membership survey, the Journal is cited as the top benefit of belonging to the institute, on a par with having that desirable set of professional initials after your name.

As of 21 July 2008, Atom took over the contract for publishing the
RIBA Journal. The editorial team transferred with the magazine, comprising Editor Hugh Pearman, Executive Editor Eleanor Young and Assistant Editor Jan-Carlos Kucharek.

Atom is truly committed to maintaining the famously independent voice of the RIBA Journal. Not only were we a perfect fit for the RIBA Journal, due to our B2B expertise and knowledge of the property and construction industry, but we are also ideally located in the heart of Clerkenwell, the “architecture village”, within a stone’s throw of many of the top names in the business – Grimshaw, BDP, Wilkinson Eyre, Chetwoods, and dozens of others.

No other publication reaches every single RIBA member, everywhere. These are the top specifiers and recruiters in the business and in the years to come their Journal is going to become more authoritative and necessary than ever.

RIBA's testimonial:

"Atom Publishing was appointed to rejuvenate the RIBA Journal in September 2008. Since then they have devoted a great deal of time and effort to understand and interpret the needs of the RIBA.

The team took a completely fresh look at every creative and commercial element of our existing publication and the subsequent re-launch of the RIBA Journal has proved highly successful and popular with our Members, the Institute and the wider readership.

The team are accessible, flexible, efficient and friendly with very high editorial and creative standards.

We look forward very much to the continuing success and evolution of the RIBA Journal with Atom Publishing."

Research:

In December 2008, Atom Publishing conducted RIBA member research.
A newsletter was sent out to over 11,000 RIBA members asking them to take part in an online questionnaire. The survey was completed by 245 RIBA members.

We asked them the following questions:

1. How much of RIBA Journal do you read regularly?
2. Are you a practising architect?
3. Do you specify products?
4. How would you rate RIBA Journal against its competitors?

In summary…

  • 91% of architects surveyed read half to all of RIBA Journal
  • 87% of architects surveyed said they are practising
  • 88% of architects surveyed said they specify products
  • 84% rate RIBA Journal as good to excellent against its competitors.
